What I learned from my practicum

As my time comes to end here at Klaipeda Science and Technology Park there are many things that I have learned. I have learned how to effectively use blogging to better market a company. I have also learned a lot about how to create and edit videos for a company and post them on the internet. This internship has taught me that YouTube can be used for a lot more then just watching videos. It’s taught me that in order for a company to be effective with YouTube that they must have numerous videos posted and not just one. While working here it’s been enjoyable to just get to know some of the other people that work here a little bit. Also after being here in Lithuania for a couple of months now I’ve learned that everything here that is cooked always comes with potatoes and pork. Overall this has been a very good opportunity for me and I am grateful to be able to have done a practicum at Klaipeda Science and Technology Park.

Social Media

Using the social media can often be to a company’s advantage. It is a very cheap and easy way to reach a lot of people. When a company decides to use the social media they must plan on using it do some networking because the social media is one the best ways for a company to meet new people. The social can also be very helpful for small companies that are just getting started and still do not have a ton of money to spend on advertising. Companies must realize though that when they use the social the media as a means of advertising or public relations it is simply not the same as using a face to face marketing technique because it is not nearly as personal. Also when companies use the social media to advertise they need to remember that they may be leaving out a significant sector of the market that does not even use the internet such as the elderly.
As I have had the opportunity to work with the social media here at Klaipeda Science and Technology Park I have found that it has been a very good way for them to promote their company. The social media is rather easy for a company to get using. Also it is fitting that they use the social media here at Klaipeda Science and Technology Park because they are rather small company that does not have a ton of money to spend on advertising right now. It is also a very easy to make Klaipeda Science and Technology Park a little bit more well known by doing things such as blogging, creating YouTube videos about there company, networking and other things as well. Overall I would say that the social media is a very good thing for companies to use and I would recommend that Klaipeda Science and Technology Park continue to use it.

United States Innovation vs. Lithuanian Innovation

If a person wanted a start there own business then they would realize that it is much easier to do in the United States then many other places around the world. There are many reasons why it is easy for people to start their own business in the U.S. One of the main the reasons that U.S. has succeeded in becoming such a big market for innovations is because they are so culturally diverse. The more diversity that a country has the easier it is for innovation to occur because then people are naturally open and willing to accept new ideas as you have people from a number of different countries. There is no bigger melting pot in the world then America so that naturally makes America a better spot for innovation then some other countries. Also in America kids are encouraged to ask questions in school and think outside of the box and that simply helps and encourages people to come up with new ideas. The last reason that it is so easy to start a business in America is because is focused on being a very capitalistic market. In order for a capital market to function properly people must be constantly coming up with new innovations.
In other countries such as Lithuania it is not nearly easy to start your own business and people just are not as innovative. One of the main reasons for this is because of the culture in Lithuania. If anyone has ever been to Lithuania then they will find out that there is not a whole lot of ethnic diversity there. As a result people may not be as open to new ideas that are taken from other cultures because it’s not their culture or they are not ready to break tradition yet. Also in the education system in Lithuania children are generally to taught to sit in class and listen to there teacher and not to ask a whole lot of questions. So in Lithuania they don’t encourage people to be innovative as much as some countries. Another thing that makes it harder for people in Lithuania to start there own business is the fact that they have not had a capital market for very long. For the most part a countries ability to be innovative is determined by it’s culture. A countries culture is not something that can simply be changed overnight. There are some countries that have cultures that encourage innovation more and others that do not encourage innovation as much.
Overall I would conclude that it is much easier to start a business in the U.S. then in Lithuania simply because the culture allows for it. In the U.S. there is such a diversity of people and that makes it very easy for people to accept new and innovative. If a person plans on starting a small business I would recommend that they try to do in the U.S. because it’s easier to do there then in many other countries.

Top Marine Technology & Biology Programs

If you take a look at marine technology and biology in the U.S. you will find that it still isn’t very well developed. There are a lot of schools in the U.S. that offer some program that is closely related to marine biology like a minor or concentration in marine biology but there are not very many colleges that actually offer a marine biology major. Here is a look at some of the better schools that offer a marine biology major.

California State University, Long Beach

There program is designed for anyone who wants to pursue a masters degree in marine biology or ecology or go on to work for a government agency or private company once they are finished. Here students will have the opportunity to study many organisms but in the field and in the lab. They have four boats that they used for both research and teaching. They are located close to Catalina Island and just recently renovated a Marine Lab. Students will have to take a variety courses such as chemistry, physics, and calculus but will also have to opportunity to choose from electives such as marine microorganisms, marine mammalogy, aquatic toxicology, fisheries conservation, marine community ecology, giant kelp ecology, and fish physiology and endocrinology and many more.

Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, Florida: Marine Biology & Engineering

At the Florida Institute of Technology they focus on integrating oceanography, ocean engineering, environmental science, marine science, meteorology and related academic concentrations in order to come up with knowledge based solutions for the problems of the world today. Here students will have numerous oppertunities to use their skills in 150 mile long Indian River Lagoon that is filled with mud and sand flats, 5 different kinds of sea grass beds, and other marshy areas. Here they are equipped with a 60‘ vessel for research, a state of the arch marine center, a beach marine laboratory and much more. Here students will get first hand experience in field within their first semestre. I.

University of Hawaii, Manoa: Marine Biology

At the University of Hawaii there is a lot of hands on experience offered as the University tries to integrale field experience with your typical classroom and lab settings. This program is still fairly new as it was launched for the first time in the fall of 2003. Students will learn about a variety of marine species and how they interact with each other in tropical and sub-tropical environments. Students will also have the opportunity to work with a large range of organisms that include seabirds, marine mammals, sharks, fishes, invertebrates, algae, and micro-organisms.

Massachuets Maritime Academy: Marine Engineering

This major aims to prepare students to be a licensed engineering officers in the United States Merchant marines and other engineering positions in associated shoreside industrines. While students are here they will take course in nternal and external combustion engines, electricity and electronics, auxiliaries and main propulsion machinery, and the organization and operation of merchant vessel engineering plants. Students will have the opportunity to work on ships while in port and ships at sea and they will also do a lot of stuff in the laboratory. By the time students graduate they will have passed examinations by the United States Coast Guard as Third Assistant Engineers, Steam and Motor, Unlimited Horsepower.

Texas A&M University at Galveston

Another very good university that a person should consider checking is Texas A&M. They offer degrees in marine biology, marine fisheries, marine sciences, marine engineering technology and a few more. In marine biology and marine sciences students will be focusing more on the science side of things as they study chemistry, physics, oceanography, geology, and much more. Students in these programs can choose when it comes time for their senior year whether they wish to gain a broader background in ocean studies or specialize more in environmental science. Those who major in marine fisheries will focus on biology with an emphasis on management and can expect to study ecology, taxonomy, zoogeography, culture, and general biology. Graduates are prepared to work as fisheries managers or research biologists for the state or federal government. In marine engineering students will focus on science and engineering and the goal will be to have them ready be a licensed engineer when they graduate.

Ways for Lithuanian Company to start a business in the U.S.

If there is a company or person in Lithuania who wants to start a business in the USA or enter the USA market then there are several things that they must focus on. It would be smart to focus on anything to do with cars, whether this involves making cars or just selling the parts for them. Also it would be smart to focus on producing some sort of machinery such as electrical, office, power generating, or simply general machinery. At the moment that is something that the U.S. is definitely in need of because all of those are in their top imports. Another thing that a person might want to focus on if they’re thinking about entering the U.S. market is the clothing industry. If you ever been to U.S. and done any shopping for clothes then you may have noticed that there are hardly any clothes that you buy are actually made in the U.S. Most of the clothes people buy are made in China or Taiwan or some country like that in Asia. If the Lithuania could tap into the U.S. clothing then it would be a great advantage too them. Once a company is established then it would probably not be overwhelmingly to difficult to remain profitable because people always have to buy clothes to wear and for the most part there will always be little kids growing up who continue to out grow their clothes. Some other industries that people may also consider going into in order to enter the U.S. are making DVDS, tin supplier, and aircraft equipment.
There are also several other things that company must do if they want to successfully enter the U.S. market. It is very important that a company uses direct marketing to in order to try and enter the market. Even though this method may be more expensive at first it will pay dividends later and this also shows the company that you are working with that you care enough to invest extra time in them beyond what other companies have invested. Another important thing to remember when trying to enter the U.S. market is to keep the sales letters and brochures short. No one wants to waste there time reading something that is really long and wordy. A good general rule is to make sure and try and keep the sales letters and brochures under 2 pages. If a company has good website that is easy to navigate, catches the eye, and doesn’t have a lot of pop-up ads or anything along those lines then it will make it easier for them to enter the market in the U.S. Lastly you want to make sure to have an effective marketing strategy through email. You do not want to simply send random people emails about your company but instead let people give you there email voluntarily and then send them newsletters and other information.

Innovation in America vs. Innovation in Europe

If you look at innovation in the United States you will see that they have always had the edge in coming up with new technology for a number of years. This may no longer be the case. The United States had the advantage for a while first of all because of the all the requirements that they put on patents, copyrights, and other laws pertaining to the invention of new technologies. Also they were able to keep this advantage for a while because they are one of the richest countries in the world and for a while all they had to do was put more money into spending and research and development then other countries. A country will not always be able to simply outspend others people because they are a rich country. Lately what has been happening is some other countries have been spending more then the USA on research and development and there have been more people in Asia getting their doctorate degrees in areas such as research and development. Right now there is simply more talent in Asia then in the USA. A few other things that have changed are that there have been an increasing number of patent applicants from Asia within the last 10-15 years. Also the number of research papers that the Asia has been publishing concerning science and technology has increased while the number of papers published in the U.S. has been decreasing.

Although to some people it may appear as if Europe has not made huge strides lately in technology they definitely are going places. Europe is simply overshadowed by the dominant U.S. and Asian companies. The future definitely looks bright for them though as Nokia is one of the top cell-phone companies in the phone industry. Nokia has continued to also come out with things such as palm pilots and mobile handsets to keep them ahead of competitors. The future is certainly very bright for Europe with plenty of German automakers leading the way now as the U.S. has had a total meltdown of the big three automakers. European innovation can be very deceiving at times because a lot of there innovation comes from small to mid size companies that make a lot of heavy machinery for countries such as India, China, and Russia. There are questions as to whether or not Europe can maintain this increase in innovation because of the economic downturn. I would say the future is still very bright for Europe because of all the potential that countries like Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, the United Kingdom, and Denmark have.
