Innovation in America vs. Innovation in Europe

If you look at innovation in the United States you will see that they have always had the edge in coming up with new technology for a number of years. This may no longer be the case. The United States had the advantage for a while first of all because of the all the requirements that they put on patents, copyrights, and other laws pertaining to the invention of new technologies. Also they were able to keep this advantage for a while because they are one of the richest countries in the world and for a while all they had to do was put more money into spending and research and development then other countries. A country will not always be able to simply outspend others people because they are a rich country. Lately what has been happening is some other countries have been spending more then the USA on research and development and there have been more people in Asia getting their doctorate degrees in areas such as research and development. Right now there is simply more talent in Asia then in the USA. A few other things that have changed are that there have been an increasing number of patent applicants from Asia within the last 10-15 years. Also the number of research papers that the Asia has been publishing concerning science and technology has increased while the number of papers published in the U.S. has been decreasing.

Although to some people it may appear as if Europe has not made huge strides lately in technology they definitely are going places. Europe is simply overshadowed by the dominant U.S. and Asian companies. The future definitely looks bright for them though as Nokia is one of the top cell-phone companies in the phone industry. Nokia has continued to also come out with things such as palm pilots and mobile handsets to keep them ahead of competitors. The future is certainly very bright for Europe with plenty of German automakers leading the way now as the U.S. has had a total meltdown of the big three automakers. European innovation can be very deceiving at times because a lot of there innovation comes from small to mid size companies that make a lot of heavy machinery for countries such as India, China, and Russia. There are questions as to whether or not Europe can maintain this increase in innovation because of the economic downturn. I would say the future is still very bright for Europe because of all the potential that countries like Germany, Sweden, Switzerland, Finland, the United Kingdom, and Denmark have.
